Lake Filling to Create New Destination on Maribyrong River
The flow of 200 million litres of river water into the new Edgewater Lake bed will convert a section of the Maribyrnong River valley into a major inner-city lake and wetlands area open to the public.

On site today at the Edgewater on Maribyrnong residential development, City of Maribyrnong Mayor Gerard White started the filling of the Edgewater Lake with the release of the first of the 200 million litres of water needed to fill Melbourne’s newest lake.

The seven hectare man-made Edgewater Lake is connected to the Maribyrnong River and will be the focal point of the Melbourne's newest riverfront development, Edgewater on the Maribyrnong.

Project Director Alex Pyrlis said the lake filling was an important development for the inner western suburbs of Melbourne because the lake and associated wetland areas will give the public access to whole new areas of open space to enjoy.

“We have made history here today because Edgewater Lake will open up this fantastic site, which boasts 1.5 kilometres of Maribyrnong River frontage and spectacular Melbourne city views, to the public for the first time," said Mr Pyrlis.

“Edgewater Lake will be joined to the river via two channels and will therefore be accessible by river taxis, ferries, and small to medium sized boats."

"This will enable people to cruise to Edgewater Lake from places such as the Docklands, Southgate and Williamstown.”

Mr Pyrlis said the lake and wetlands area would be a social hub as well as provide a habitat for native flora and fauna.

“The new parklands will be the community heart of Edgewater, a place where residents and locals from surrounding suburbs can enjoy the best of the river lifestyle Melbourne has to offer,” said Mr Pyrlis.

Construction is underway on the creation and landscaping of 15 hectares of surrounding parks and wetlands which will provide valuable green space for residents and visitors alike.

The new inner urban waterfront community is beginning to take shape, with more than 170 blocks of land sold. When completed, there will be more than 1,200 homes on the unique 95-hectare site.

“Land has been selling quickly to date but now that the lake has been filled we expect an even stronger response from the market,” said Mr Pyrlis.

“In addition to vacant land, Edgewater offers a variety of living options, such as house and land packages currently available through a number of builders and the soon to be released terrace homes and apartments with magnificent views of the city.”
